Fellowship Program

Dalhousie University, Department of Psychiatry is offering Fellowship positions in the following academic/clinical specialty areas:

Mood Disorders
The research component of this fellowship includes: areas of family and high risk studies of bipolar disorder; treatment response and phenotypic spectra of bipolar disorder; molecular-genetic and mapping studies in bipolar disorder (in collaboration); mathematical analysis of genetics of complex traits; population-based registry of bipolar disorder; genetics of suicidal behaviour in mood disorders.

Early Psychosis
A Fellowship position is available in the Nova Scotia Early Psychosis Program. This Fellowship position would consist of clinical, research, and teaching components. The Nova Scotia Early Psychosis Program is also actively involved in community mental health education and the Fellow would have the opportunity to gain skills in teaching and in psychoeducation through participation in the Early Psychosis Mentorship Program, the Family Education Program and the Sibling Education Program.

Psychotherapy
This position would consist of clinical, research, and teaching components. Our program is actively involved in teaching, research, and providing Intensive Short-term Dynamic Psychotherapy regarding patients with somatoform disorders, personality disorders, anxiety disorder, depression, and other conditions. A fellow would learn research methods, diagnostic, and treatment procedures and be able to participate in a range of research and teaching activities including a Cochrane review of STDP effectiveness, ISTDP in treatment of resistant depression, STDP cost effectiveness, and modified STDP in severe mental disorders.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dalhousie University, and the Mental Health Program, IWK Health Centre, offer research, clinical, and blended fellowship training programs for periiods of one to two years to psychiatrists who have completed residency training and have been awarded specialist certification in psychiatry. The fellowship program is flexible to accommodate individual needs, while maintaining core goals.

Forensic Psychiatry
The fellow would gain experience in the outpatient and inpatient assessment of individuals remanded for assessment of fitness to stand trial, issues of criminal responsibility, and also gain experience in the assessment and treatment of offenders with serious psychiatric and behavioural problems.

In conjunction with the sex offender program director, the fellow would gain experience in the assessment and treatment of sex offenders.

Learning goals will be accomplished via hands on experience, mentoring, and guided readings.

The fellow may audit courses in both mental health and criminal law at Dalhousie Law School and the Division of Forensic Psychology at Dalhousie University.

Geriatric Psychiatry
A fellowship is available in geriatric psychiatry with the Seniors Mental Health Team. The fellow will have an opportunity to train in clinical, teaching, and research settings. The Seniors Mental Health Program offers services in outreach (home visits and nursing home visits), outpatients, inpatient, and Day Program settings as well as experience in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in the elderly. The fellow would manage an elderly populations with late onset psychiatric illness, dementia, co-morbid medical illness, and polypharmacy. The team consists of four psychiatrists and a complete multidisciplinary team.

International Psychiatry
The International Psychiatry Section offers an international fellowship opportunity that involves policy and training work in the developing world and clinical consultation regarding cultural issues to psychiatric service in Nova Scotia. The fellow will be expected to publish at least one paper and participate in various training programs and educational materials development as well. The Candidate must be willing to travel and to be absent for periods of time ranging from one to four weeks and to take individual initiatives in providing clinical care in the developing world with minimal supervision. This is a position for the independent and highly motivated individual only.

Applicants must be medically qualified, possess an FRCPC (Psychiatry) or equivalent Department of Psychiatry Fellowship fund, be eligible for licensure in the Province of Nova Scotia and be able to practice clinically in a subspecialty area with supervision.

The annual salary is based on external funding sources the candidates may be able to secure or the program maybe able to offer financial packages secured with the Department of Psychiatry.

On the successful completion of the application process, the Fellow will be required to develop their individual learning objectives and curriculum as determined together with their respective Fellowship Supervisor. Fellowship programs will start on July 1 and end on June 30 unless other dates are negotiated.
