Our Program
is designed to prepare Residents to practice as independent
specialists in general psychiatry or one of its subspecialties
with the necessary knowledge, clinical skills and attitudes
to function successfully as a consultant to physician colleagues
and colleagues in other clinical disciplines.
All the training
requirements for certification in psychiatry from the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) must
be met, and Residents must pass both the written and clinical/oral
examinations for certification. Within the program we also
strive to provide Residents with all the mandatory training
required for RCPSC certification, while retaining choice
in elective rotations in the senior years. The ability to
review psychiatric literature critically and to undertake
at least a modest piece of research work or scholarly activity
is mandatory. These overall objectives are achieved through
didactic content, research and various clinical rotations
and through regular evaluation processes.
| NOTE: The
PGY-1 through PGY-5 clinical rotations are currently
under review to reflect the new RCPSC Specialty Training
Requirements in Psychiatry (2007). This will be
implemented for new residents beginning in July 2008. |
2007/08 Outline of Clinical Rotations
| PGY-1 |
13- four week rotations as
follows
- 3 Rotations
Psychiatry (1 in Metro Halifax*, 2 in Saint John,
NB**)
- 2 Rotations General Medicine
- 1 Rotation Neurology
- 2 Rotations Emergency Medicine
- 1 Rotation Pediatric Neurology
- 1 Rotation Family Medicine
- 3 Rotations Selectives***
*The first
rotation of the year will be psychiatry based in the Halifax-Dartmouth
area, so that the introductory series of seminars can be
offered to all PGY 1 trainees. PGY-1 Residents will
be assigned to a mentor and their service for the first four-week
block.
**Residents
can expect to spend a minimum of 8 weeks rotating in Saint
John, New Brunswick as
two of the PSYCHIATRY rotations are based at the Atlantic
Health Sciences Centre (AHSC) in
Saint John. Although residents have the option to rank location
for NEUROLOGY or EMERGENCY
MEDICINE, it is possible that you may have to do one of these
rotations at AHSC.
This could bring your total time in Saint John, to a maximum
of 16 weeks during PGY 1.
*** "Selective" rotations
will be in a further branch of psychiatry or in an allied
field linked to psychiatry chosen by the resident and approved by the
Department--eg.,
physical medicine and rehabilitation, geriatric medicine, endocrinology,
obstetrics & gynecology.
Other branches
of medicine suggested by the trainee can be considered if
they can be arranged by agreement
between the Department of Psychiatry and the relevant other
department.
