The Academic Funding Plan (AFP) is a funding agreement between the Department of Psychiatry, the Department of Health and Wellness, Dalhousie University, Capital District Health Authority, and the IWK Health Centre. The contract is for a specified period of time and outlines how the Department of Psychiatry is funded. The AFP provides the funding for physician compensation and financial support to the Department to fund the academic mission.

The original AFP was for the period April 1, 2002 to March 31, 2006. It was further extended to March 31, 2007 and then to March 31, 2008. The Department of Psychiatry entered into a new AFP contract in November 2010 for the period April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2011.
