The Dean’s office distributes a list of faculty members who are newly eligible for promotion, tenure or reappointment on July 1 of each year. Should you be eligible for promotion or tenure, or should your faculty appointment be up for renewal, you will be notified by the Chair of the Committee. You may apply for promotion before your eligibility date if you think you meet the criteria specified for your particular rank.
The deadline for the Committee receiving your application for promotion is
September 1.
Promotion
It is mandatory that all faculty members applying for promotion or tenure provide both a teaching dossier and updated curriculum vitae according tothe criteria of the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. All faculty are encouraged to develop a teaching dossier. Courses and seminars on how to prepare a teaching dossier are offered from time to time and faculty members are encouraged to attend these. All promotion and tenure candidates should familiarize themselves with the guidelines, forms. and requirements:
Tenure
The reappointment stream for tenure is from probationary tenure track (first three years); to tenure track (another three years). You must be in the tenure stream in order to apply for tenure and you will be eligible to apply for tenure in the fall of the second year of the tenure track appointment. This category is mostly for full-time PhD faculty and not for most MDs.
Reappointment
Faculty whose appointments are up for renewal should read the Faculty of Medicine criteria and standards for reappointment. There are four kinds
of faculty appointment:
- Probationary periodic review-track appointment (first three years)
- Periodic review-track appointment (next three years)
- Continuing appointment with periodic review (next five years and subsequent re-appointment in five-year intervals)
- Limited term appointment (1-2 years) - generally for cross appointments, adjunct appointments, off-site and community based and short term appointments
Candidates for promotion, tenure or reappointment should write to the Chair of the Promotions, Tenure and Reappointment Committee to indicate their wishes. This letter should include a description of how the various criteria for Promotions, Tenure or Reappointment have been met by the candidate.
